In Defense of Modern Art

The story goes that Edward Steichen, the famous photographer, once approached Picasso and criticized his paintings as distorting reality.

“My paintings do not distort reality. I paint things as I see them,” said Picasso.

“No, my photographs show things as they are,” said Steichen.

“I paint things as I see them,” said Picasso.

Steichen produced a small photo of his wife from his wallet. “You see, THIS is my wife as she really is.”

"She's beautiful," replied Picasso, "but she's so tiny.”
